November 2021 Storm Arwen

On Friday 26th November 2021 Scotland and northern England were battered by Storm Arwen, for most a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Although October and November can be extremely windy at times we had never experienced anything as bad as this before. When we were living in the South of England the storm of 1987 caused devastation but not to the extent that we witnessed the following morning.

After a terrifying night the winds eventually eased a little and we were relieved to have suffered only minimal damage in the garden. However, huge numbers of trees had been ripped out from their roots and wooded areas were halved with trees lying in rows on their side. Paxton House suffered badly with numerous trees down including some of their largest and oldest trees. It was strange to see view you weren't used to seeing. Now, almost a year later the only evince of last year's ordeal are a few logs and tree stumps. Although a number of trees have been lost the views are still as fabulous as ever, the grass is lush and green and the river flows past as if nothing has changed. Strangely you begin to forget what it was like before. Let's hope we never experience any thing like it again.
