Abbey St Bathans River Walk

This pleasant walk along the banks of the Whiteadder Water in the village of Abbey St
Bathans is an extremely peaceful and relaxing stroll. The riverside walk forms part of the Southern Upland Way and will take about 45 minutes.

Abbey St Bathans is situated in the Lammermuir Hills, about 7.5 miles from Duns. After descending the hill onto the wooded river valley follow the road past he timber yard and restaurant until you reach the church on your right. The Southern Upland Way is signposted left up into the hills and right towards the river.

1.  Keeping the church on your right walk down to the river where you will see some seats. Cross the river via the footbridge into the woods on the opposite bank, not forgetting to stop and enjoy the river view. This path is part of the South Upland Way.

3. After a short while cross a small wooden bridge across a small stream and you will see a larger bridge crossing the river.  You can either cross via this bridge or over the ford which is passable on foot unless the water level is high.

Ford Crossing The River

4. After crossing the river walk to the end of the road and turn left onto the village road. A little way along the road is a small track/road leading to the river.  Walk down to the river and then take a path on your left which will take you back to the ford.

5. Either take the path beside the river which will take you back to the seats and the church or cross the bridge and retrace your steps back through the woods.
